You can sponsor certain relatives to come live, study and work in Canada if you’re at least 18 years old and a permanent citizen of Canada. Some specific requirements must be met by both the applicant and the sponsor.
Family reunification is one of the objectives of the Immigration Act (IRPA). As a Canadian Citizen or Permanent resident, if you can prove that your marriage is legal and the relationship is genuine, you may be eligible to sponsor your spouse or common-law partner to become a Permanent Resident in Canada under the Spousal Sponsorship application.
As a PR or a Canadian Citizen, you may be eligible to sponsor your own child or your spouse’s dependent child, or any child you want to adopt in Canada. The definition of a dependent child is either a
1.) Biological child of the parent, OR
2.) Adopted child of the parent, and
i.) is less than 22 years of age, and doesn’t have a spouse or common-law partner
ii.) is 22 years or older; has been dependent substantially financially on the parent since before age of 22; unable to support themselves financially due to physical or mental condition.
The PGP (Parents and Grandparents sponsorship program) allows eligible Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents to apply for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents so that they can become Permanent Residents in Canada. You can only apply for PGP if you have already received an invitation to apply from IRCC.
